TBM wins Grand Prix AIS Award for Innovative Excellence
Three Blind Mice Communications (TBM) was presented as the joint winner of the Grand Prix Award at the annual Age of Innovation and Sustainability Awards (AIS) gala event, held on 12 August 2003 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The event was presented by Axius and the Da Vinci Institute for Technology Management and sponsored by ICT solutions and services company T-Systems. Minister Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, presented the award. TBM also won the Excellence in Innovation & Sustainability award, in the Economic ICT category.
The Age of Innovation and Sustainability Awards Campaign (AIS) has as its objective identifying South Africa’s most innovative and sustainable initiatives, projects and undertakings. The campaign manifesto is to celebrate the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of South Africa by identifying those individuals or organizations that have applied what is referred to as “beyond-the-box” thinking as a means of adding sustainable value.
TBM have used innovative ideas from different disciplines within digital technology and combined these to revolutionise the process of visual communication, producing an internationally unique technology, which overcomes the problems presented by the lack of stable and reliable terrestrial communications. The technology offers vast reach and versatility at cost effective prices, and although currently used primarily as a major advertising channel, has significant potential as a commercially viable channel for addressing education and skills transfer needs at community level. TBM is a 75,8% black controlled ICT company that has developed unique technologies for the delivery – via satellite – of large video files to individually controllable display screens. TBM was named a Technology Top 100 Company in 2002 for its innovative technology. A media owner that sells cost-effective advertising on more than 1000 screens around South Africa, TBM was also the official supplier of audio-visual solutions to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg in 2002. TBM also operates private TV stations for government and corporate clients, which are used for business to consumer communication (external), staff training and communication (internal), and education.
