Silverstar Casino continues to host chess competition to nine primary schools on the West Rand.

Nine primary schools on the West Rand have benefited massively from Tsogo Sun and Silverstar Casino’s Moves for Life programme after a chess competition commemorating the International Day of Chess from 25 to 28 July was held.

The aim of the activities was to focus on chess as an inclusive and entertaining sport that can be applied to many different aspects of learning.

Silverstar Casino has sponsored the chess programme for nine West Rand schools for four consecutive years. This year saw Avante Primary, FJL Wells Primary, Hartzstraat Primary, Krugersdorp Town School, Mashudu Primary, Mohlakano Primary, Nooitgedacht Primary, Paardekraal Primary and Randfontein Primary all join in the fun.

The competition included creativity from the little ones as they were tasked with designing their own chess boards using recycled material. Shanda Paine, Tsogo Sun’s Group CSI Manager said, “The International Day of Chess activities over the four days were a huge hit with the children, who participated wholeheartedly, while gaining skills in chess, maths, communication, expression, reasoning, planning, creativity, self-confidence, and more, as well as creating greater awareness of the significant benefits that chess can offer every child within the schools and among parents.

Shane Collinson, Operations Director and Complex GM of Silverstar Casino said, “It is a privilege to be in a position to take this value-adding chess programme to these young learners on the West Rand.

The Tsogo Sun Moves for Life chess programme intentionally links chess principles to life skills, mathematics, science and language, and impacts the educational performance of as many children as possible.”
