WESTERN Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore has welcomed a pledge by gambling company Vukani Gaming of R2 million to be used to boost literacy and numeracy in rural schools.

Vukani head Elias Mphande said it was the company’s mission to give back to communities and over the past three years it had helped 175 schools in the Western Cape through V-Slots. The funds, donated to Edupeg, an educational project of the SA Clothing and Textile Workers Union, had helped empower 1 667 teachers and train 54 959 pupils.

Edupeg spokesman Liz Swersky said “The Edupeg training model is multiple choice, self-corrective and integrated and can be used in an outcomes base education system.

The model was contained in 22 individual colour coded workbooks and involved cross curricuiar exercises including language, literacy, numeracy, life-skills, human and environmental sciences.

Dugmore said he would consult with department officials on what extent the Edupeg training model could be rolled out to benefit all 280 000 foundation pupils in the system across the provinces.
