Four years of back-to-back shows have cemented the Teatro at Montecasino’s reputation for excellence in bringing a diverse range of world-class shows to theatregoers across Gauteng – including the Teatro’s two-millionth visitor.

The Teatro celebrated its two-millionth visitor a little over a week ago, on one of the final nights of the world premiere of the The Imperial Ice Stars Nutcracker on Ice spectacular.

From ballet to jazz, to gospel, rock, pop and classic musicals, the Teatro has hosted over 56 dazzling productions across a number of genres. Last year alone saw the Comic’s Choice Awards, Dreamgirls, Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour, Jesus Christ Superstar, Loyiso Gola, the International Ballet Gala, ‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’ featuring the Parlotones, the fourth annual Jozi Comedy Fest, Dianne Reeves, The Mandela Trilogy, The Johan Botha Gala Concert, Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles, Riverdance, John Cleese, Joyous Celebration, Janet Jackson and Goldfish all appear on the Teatro stage to great acclaim.

“Our vision for the Teatro is to continue to host wide range of diverse productions which appeal to very different audiences and demographic groups. Not only will this ensure the ongoing success of the Teatro as a world-class venue, but most importantly, will ensure that the Teatro continues to contribute to the growth of theatre audiences in South Africa, as many of the visitors to the Teatro have never ventured into a theatre before,” says Bryan Hill, General Manager of the Teatro at Montecasino.

A total of 210 000 people visited the Teatro in 2011, putting overall 2011 occupancy at 82% – just two percent less than the total occupancy the Teatro has enjoyed since opening in 2007. With its reputation for bringing such a myriad of world-class local and international productions to Jozi, it’s no wonder that the Teatro at Montecasino was recently voted Best Theatre in the Leisure Options Readers Choice Awards, for the second year in a row.

“Under the current economic conditions, which has seen a reduction in theatre-going audiences, shortened runs and reduced ticket prices elsewhere in the marketplace, the attendance figures are a clear indication of the appeal of the Teatro at Montecasino and the internationally renowned shows we bring to the stage. This, and the fact that Diana and her friend had travelled all the way from Vereeniging to enjoy the show, highlights the Teatro’s continued ability to attract record numbers of visitors, including new patrons from all walks of life, thanks in no small part to its safe and convenient location and the world-class quality of its shows,” concludes Bryan Hill, General Manager of the Teatro.

The Teatro at Montecasino’s success looks set to continue in 2012 with a jam-packed line-up of international hit shows. Watch www.montecasino.co.za for all the details as they become available.
