South African hotel and casino group Tsogo Sun which manages over 3,200 hotel rooms as well as a numerous casino complexes, such as Montecasino and Gold Reef, embarked on a project in 2010 to replace all the element water heating systems with heat pump technologies. This project was completed by the end of 2011 and resulted in a 60% reduction in electricity consumption for hot water generation.

It is estimated that the carbon footprint reduction due to this project is 7,500 tonnes of CO2 a year. The group has to date saved 19 million kWh of energy, which represents a saving of 10.8% through the installation of heat pumps and energy efficient lighting at all its gaming and hotel properties.

Combined initiatives in Tsogo Sun hotels so far have resulted in a 21% reduction in energy usage since 2006.
